SUMMARY:St. Cloud Area Genealogists (SCAG)- Nancy Loe: "Finding Females in US Naturalization Records\, 1790-1952"
DESCRIPTION:St. Cloud – Nancy Loe will kick off the St. Cloud Area Genealogists (SCAG) 2024-25 speaker series by presenting “Finding Females in U.S. Naturalization Records 1790-1952” on Tuesday\, Sept. 17\, at 7 p.m.\n\nWhether you’re missing a naturalization record or finding an unexpected one\, this session will help you discover how female ancestors — both foreign-born and birthright — gained\, lost or regained citizenship in the United States between 1790 and 1952. U.S. citizenship and attendant rights for women can be fragile\, depending on marital status\, prevailing laws\, social norms and other shifting factors. The presentation will include examples of U.S. naturalization and citizenship records\, and search strategies for finding these records.\n\nAs an archivist\, librarian and genealogist\, Nancy has been helping researchers with their family trees since 1977. She specializes in U.S. and European family history research\, presenting at webinars and conferences in the United States\, Canada and Australia\, including sessions for the National Genealogical Society and RootsTech. Nancy’s genealogy e-books and free monthly newsletter are available at www.sassyjanegenealogy.com.\n\nThe online event will be presented live for viewing remotely or watching with others at the Stearns History Museum\, 235 33rd Ave. S.\, St. Cloud. The program is free to SCAG members; $7 for non-members. Non-members should email treasurer@scagmn.org at least one day prior to the event. Once paid\, you will receive details on how to attend or how to receive a recording of the presentation. The individual annual membership rate for SCAG is $25.

SUMMARY:St. Cloud Area Genealogists - What the Heck Does That Say?
DESCRIPTION:One of the biggest hurdles to overcome in genealogy is the seemingly illegible handwriting in our ancestors’ records. Professional genealogist Pam Vestal will address that challenge when she presents the webinar “What the Heck Does that Say? Overcoming Difficult Handwriting” for the St. Cloud Area Genealogists on Tuesday\, April 18\, 2023 at 7 p.m. at Stearns History Museum (235 33 rd Ave S.\, St. Cloud). The presentation will also be available online and will be recorded for members and registered guests. \nWhether you struggle to navigate colonial penmanship that doesn’t even look like English or wrestle with contemporary documents that are poorly written\, a few good strategies can make all the difference. Participants will look at more than 20 techniques to help figure out what the chicken scratches on the page say as well as what the style of handwriting might reveal about our ancestors. \nAfter a 20-year writing career\, Pam Vestal turned her focus to genealogy. Vestal’s articles have been published in the Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly\, the National Genealogical Society Magazine and Forum magazine. She specializes in conducting genealogical research and then transforming the information into illustrated stories that even non-genealogists can enjoy. \nTuesday\, April 18\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. (CST)\nFree for members\, $7 for non-members (to register email kmsauer@ymail.com)\nOnline & at the Stearns History Museum\nfacebook.com/stcloudareagenealogists

SUMMARY:St. Cloud Area Genealogists - "Adding Leaves and Flowers to the Branches of your Family Tree" with Linda Coffin
DESCRIPTION:Join SCAG’s November meetup “Adding Leaves and Flowers to the Branches of your Family Tree” with presenter Linda Coffin. Tuesday\, November 15 @ 7pm. \nFree for SCAG members\, $7 for non-members \nA common problem for genealogists is making their research interesting enough that others will want to read about it. Genealogist Linda Coffin will address this challenge in her workshop “Adding Leaves and Flowers to the Branches of Your Family Tree” for the St. Cloud Area Genealogists on Tuesday\, November 15\, 2022 at 7 p.m. at Stearns History Museum. The presentation will also be offered synchronously online. Coffin will provide ideas for turning your charts and tables into interesting narratives\, complete with illustrations and historical context. We will discuss types of background information that can be added to your stories and review examples. You don’t need to be a talented writer to liven up your genealogical stories. You will leave feeling more confident you can do it! \n \nLinda Coffin has 35 years of experience as a self-employed graphic designer. In 2004\, she started her own business\, HistoryCrafters (www.historycrafters.com)\, to help her clients preserve memoirs and family histories and publish them as short-run books. To date\, she has worked on more than 40 such books\, for individuals\, families\, businesses\, and even a golf course! Linda is a member of the Minnesota and Wisconsin Genealogical Societies\, the National Genealogical Society\, and the Association of Professional Genealogists. She has presented at many local\, state\, and national genealogy and memoir conferences. \n  \nSt. Cloud Area Genealogists\nFounded in 1973\, the St. Cloud Area Genealogists is a non-profit organization that strives to make family history research an enriching and rewarding experience.  This premier organization is for everyone from the beginner to the most advanced family historian.  Our members research their ancestors from varying locations within Minnesota\, throughout the United States\, and from foreign countries. To learn more about becoming a SCAG member\, please contact Brendon Duffy (duffyroots@gmail.com). \nClick here for the Press Release: 2022 Nov Press Release – Linda Coffin
